Ups and downs at the Padua Invitational

by Coach Elliott on December 17, 2006

The Northview Wildcats earned a split over the weekend as they were able to beat University School and Lake Catholic, while losing to Padua and St. Edwards.

Friday Evening the Cats took on state power St. Edwards. The Cats led the game on 3 different occasions. However St. Ed’s power play was clicking all night as they found the net for 4 power play goals to sink the Cats 4-3. 2 goals by Brandon Snead and 1 from Brent Bain were not enough as the special teams struggled.

Saturday morning the Cats looked to rebound Versus University School. The Preppers got on the board first to take a 1-0 lead. However 2 minutes later Brandon Snead was able to convert a break away to tie the game at 1. Near the end of the 2nd period Northview lost Captain Matt Cook. Already playing without Nic Saenz an Carter Bourland, the Cats would have a make-shift lineup the rest of the way. Kyle Hymore continued to play inspired hockey and Freshman Brian Wadsworth kept a 2-on-1 break going by literally crawling his way off the ice. Brent Bain rewarded the effort as he put his own rebound home for the game winner. Solid defense and great goaltending from Craig Trego made it hold up, Final score Northview 2 US 1.

That evening the emotions ran high. Bourland, Cook and Saenz all rejoined the lineup as a state final rematch with Padua would bring out the best and worst from the Cats. Another goal by Brandon Snead gave the Cats an early 1-0 lead. Tyler Puhl found the net for a power play goal, and Brent Bain impressed Eammon Reynolds with a pretty goal to give the Cats a 3-0 lead early in the 2nd. De ja vu struck as memories of the State title game surfaced. 5 unanswered goals by Padua including 2 late in the period while short handed put the Cats in a 5 to 3 hole to start the 3rd. Matt Cook gave the Cats life with a even strength goal near the 3 minute mark of the 3rd. However, Padua would put it away with their 3rd short handed goal of the night into the empty net for the final, 6-4.

Sunday Morning the Cats faced Lake Catholic. Single goals from Bain, Matt Cook, Mark Hall, and Tyler Puhl provided enough offense as Trego played well in nets for a 4-1 victory.

The Cats return home for a game Thursday against St. Francis. They will also face Gilmore Academy and Upper Arlington in the Tam-o-Shanter International Tournament.

The Cats would also like to welcome everyone out for the annual Alumni game on December 26th at 6 P.M. Have a great holiday!
