Cats go 2-0-2 over MLK weekend in the Mark Rasmus Memorial Tournament

by Coach Elliott on January 19, 2023

The Wildcat hockey team started the MLK weekend with great team defense and goaltending in giving up just 1 goal vs #3 ranked University School and Cincinnati Moeller. Unfortunately the offense struggled and the Cats settled for a pair of 1-1 ties. They would rebound for a decisive 7-2 win over St. Xavier and a 3rd place consolation win over Moeller by a final score of 3-1. In all the 2 wins and 2 ties pushes the Cats overall record to 13-7-3 after 23 games.
In the opener vs University School the Cats were able to get on the board 1st as senior Landon Elliott was able to jump on a rebound on a shot from Chase Bean for a 1-0 lead. Mason Crandell also picked up an assist. Austin Nowak would stop 22 of 23 but the Preppers tied it up in the 2nd and the teams settled for a 1-1 tie.
Less than 12 hours later the Cats were back at it with a game with Moeller on Saturday morning. Another low scoring affair saw Moeller jump out to the lead on a early 1st period goal. Senior Drak Symbolik would tie it up with assist from Elliott and Seals but the Cats couldn’t find the game winner as the offense struggled in anothe 1-1 tie. Nowak was once again stubborn in stopping 19 of 20 shots in goal.
Saturday evening Ayden Crandall would spell Nowak in net and make 14 saves as the Cats skated to a rather easy 7-2 win over St. Xavier. Elliott scored his 1st career hat trick while also setting up Sophomore Reece Knapp for his 1st career goal in a 4 point night! The black unit of Seals, Harrell and Symbolik all chipped in with a goal each and Mason Crandell added 3 assist. CJ Lehman & Liam Diesing also recorded a point.
The win and 2 ties were not enough as the Cats had to settle for the 3rd place consolation game vs Moeller after tiebreaker scenarios. Symbolik scored a 1st period goal off a rebound shot of Zach Denny with Seals also picking up an assist for a 1-0 lead. However some undisciplined play in the 2nd period had the Cats marching to the penalty box. Moeller made them pay with a power play goal to tie the game in the 2nd. Tryston Harrell would give the Cats back the lead as he undressed the Moeller goalie for a pretty penalty shot goal that would prove to be the game winner. Harrell would add a 2nd of the game and insurance goal taping in a loose puck off a play from Seals and Symbolik and that was more than enough for Nowak. The senior once again yielded just a single goal while making 24 saves in the win.
Ironically the Junior Varsity team pretty much mirrored the Varsity and also started off the tournament with a pair of ties with University School and Moeller. A tough 3-1 loss to St. Xavier kept them from the championship game and they also won a rematch with Moeller in the 3rd place Consolation game to finish the weekend at 1-1-2.
The teams head into the upcoming weekend with 3 huge matchups in the NHC red and JV divisions races. Friday night the Cats take on St. Johns, Saturday they welcome in Perrysburg on Teddy Bear toss night and Sunday afternoon get their 1st look at St. Francis.  Check the Schedule page for game times and visit the Tamo link below for tickets to all games.
