4 straight wins earn Cats Cold Turkey and 1st league win

by Coach Elliott on December 12, 2013

The Wildcats suffered defeats in both of their 1st 2 games to start the 2013-14 season. 1st a league loss to St. Francis 3 to 2 and then another loss to the Frannies 1 to 0 to open up the Cold Turkey Tournament. However 4 straight wins, 3 in tournament play and another in league play, has pushed the Cats overall record to 4-2(1-1 league) and helped them capture the Cold Turkey Tournament avenging the losses to St. Francis with an overtime 4 to 3 win in the championship game.

The Cats 1st game of the season was a hard fought game with St. Francis. After falling behind 1 to 0 the Cats would strike for a pair of goals and a 2 to 1 lead. Josh Koback scored the Cats 1st goal of the season and Cody Estrel gave the Cats the lead after 2 periods. St. Francis would answer in the 3rd with a pair of their own including the game winner with 3 minutes left to hand the Cats their 1st loss.

The following weekend the Cats hosted their annual thanksgiving tournament at Tamoshanter. The Frannies once again scored in the 3rd to hand Northview a 2nd straight loss. Preston Due was solid all night in the net, but the Cats were unable to score in the 1 to 0 loss.

The next morning the Cats took on Gilmour academy. After trailing 2 to 0 the Cats offense finally found its stride. 5 goals in the final period and a half including the 1st career goal and eventual game winner from Sophomore Brendan Pierson gave the Cats their 1st victory of the season, 5 to 3. Jake Koback scored a pair of goals and Brother Josh and Cody Estrel also scored in the win.

That evening the Cats took on league foe Findlay needing points in the modified scoring system  to advance to the championship game. Junior Ian Clement scored early in the 1st and Sophomore Jarred Wulf shut out the Trojans in his 1st career start for the 3 to 0 win. Estrel picked up his 3rd of the season and Jake koback hit the empty net to seal it for the Cats. The win earned the Cats enough points to secure a spot in the championship game where they would once again take on St. Francis.

Playing for the 3rd time on the young season the Fans would be treated to another 1 goal game. Just seconds into the game St Francis scored to take and early 1 to 0 lead. Northview would answer with a pair of goals to go up 2 to 1. Jake Koback kept up his fine early season play and Ian Clement scored a short-hander for the lead. St. Francis would score the equalizer and the teams headed to the 3rd tied 2-2. The Cats looked to steal one from the Frannies book as they scored late in the 3rd.  Zack Galecki capped off a beautiful outlet pass from Senior Kooper Carter  in the final minute for a 3 to 2 lead. However Northview was called for a penalty after the goal for unsprotsmanlike and put St. Francis on the power-play for the final 47 seconds. With the goalie pulled and holding a 6 on 4 advantage the Frannies hit with just 20 seconds left to tie the game and send it into overtime. Zack Galecki really wanted that game-winner, he scored for a second time and gave the Cats a thrilling 4 to 3 overtime win and the Cold Turkey championship!!

Last weekend the Cats returned to league play with a trip to the house of pain in Findlay. They also welcomed back senior net-minder David Marsh for his 1st start. Unfortunetaly for the Cats Findlay welcomed Marsh with a goal just 26 seconds in for an early 1 to 0 lead. The score would stay that way until the 2nd period when the line of Koback, Koback and Estrel would score 4 times in the 1st 6 minutes. Caleb Rau added a short-hander and the Cats skated away with a 5 to 3 win. The win evened the Cats record in league play with a showdown with St. Johns coming on Friday.
