Cats perfect in the league with 2 wins

by Coach Elliott on February 7, 2012

The Wildcats finished off a perfect 8 and 0 league record with wins over St. Francis and Bowling Green this past weekend and picked up their league trophies in the process. The wins push the Cats overall record to 24-1-3 as they head into the league and state playoffs as the #1 seed.

On Friday night the Cats took on defending league and state champs St. Francis. 2 quick goals from Ian Clement and Dalton Carter staked the Cats to a 2 to 0 lead. The Cats traded goals with the knights as Zach Felser scored the 1st of his 4 on the night to give the Cats a 3 to 1 lead. St. Francis stunned the undisciplined Cats with 3 power-play goals in just over a minute to take a 4 to3 lead. Felser would grab the momentum right back with a power-play goal of his own to knot the game at 4, then give the Cats the lead with his hat-trick goal to make it 5 to 4 after 2 periods. Cody Estrel gave the Cats a little cushion with a goal early in the 3rd and Felser would finish of his night and the Knights with a shorthanded goal for the final margin 7 to 4. Austin Gryca stopped 18 of 21 shots to ean the win in nets. Unfortunately for the Cats they lost senior defense man Nick Foti to a broken jaw near the end of the 2nd period.

On Saturday The Cats looked for league perfection versus Bowling Green. The Cats peppered the BG net for 35 shots in the 2 to 0 win. Several close calls kept the Cats from breaking it loose but they still earned the victory on the strength of  a power-play goal from Jacob Koback and an even strength goal from Senior Brent Easton. Senior Phil Bowles picked up his 6th shutout of the season and 13 of his career just 2 shy of Craig Trego’s all-time record of 15.

The Cats will play the winner of the 4/5 seed game between St. Francis and Bowling Green next Saturday at 7 at Tam-o-Shanter. The winner will play for the league playoff championship versus the winner of St. Johns and Findlay Sunday Afternoon at 1:15.
