Cats first weekend a success, win Cold Turkey Tourney

by Coach Elliott on December 3, 2008

The Wildcats had a successful start to a new era in Team history. First year head coach Mike Jones guided his team to the championship of the Cold Turkey Thanksgiving Tournament at Tam-O-Shanter with a thrilling 3-2 victory over St. Francis on Sunday.

Friday Evening the Cats got the 2008-09 season going against Dematha from Maryland. Bob Napierala and Kyle Hymore each scored a goal and Matt Duvall scored his first 2 career goals in the win. Freshman goaltender Austin Gryca picked up his first win in the 4-2 final.

Saturday Morning the Cats were too much for Trinity. Matt Stevenson picked up the easy shutout stopping just 4 shots in the 5-0 win. Mark Hall had a pair of goals, Hymore,Nile Culver and Aaron Booth’s career first also scored for the Cats.

That evening the Cats took on St. Francis in the last round robin game. The Knights scored first before Josh Cole tied it with his first career goal. Then with a 5 on 3 advantage Coach Jones showed some of his aggressive play by pulling the goalie in the first period for a 6 on 3. Unfortunetly a bad bounce led to a 160 ft. empty net goal and a 2-1 St. Francis lead. The Cats were relentless the rest of the game pouring 27 shots over the final 2 periods. The hard work paid off as Kyle Hymore scored a short handed goal with under a minute left for a 2-2 tie.

The 2 team would meet for a rematch on Sunday Morning in the Championship. This time the Cats wouldn’t be denied. Matt Duvall continued his strong start with a pair of goals and Tyler Harding picked up his career first on the power play in the 3-2 Win. Matt Stevenson played well stopping 16 of 18 shots for the Cats.
