Captain Cook Inherits Tough Role

by Coach Elliott on February 1, 2007

Matt Cook was named the Captain of the 2006-07 Northview Wildcats at the end of last season. An obvious choice of the coaching staff, Matt has had the unenviable task of leading a team that will draw comparisons to last years team. Coach Cooper and his staff have always known that each team is very different from the year before. Even if you only remove 1 or 2 players, the chemistry of a new team is always difficult to achieve. Luckily for Northview Matt Cook has always been dedicated to his team, his coaches and his school.

Matt Came to Northview during his freshman year. Nearing the end of his travel hockey days, his parents Dave and Dianne were looking for what would be best for Matt both educationally and athletically. His older brother Mike had played for Northview during a spring league so there was a relationship with Northview Hockey. Knowing that Northview also provided a quality education they decided that it would be best for Matt to make the move to Sylvania. The decision has paid big dividends for both the Cook family and Sylvania Northview.

Matt’s first year for the Wildcats came during his Sophomore season. He played on the wing with senior and former standout Drew Stark. He tallied 13 goals to go along with 15 assist that first year as Northview finished with a 26-6-1 record. However Matt and Northview wanted more after a disappointing finish in the state playoffs. During Matt’s junior year he moved to center with 2 new line mates. After a slow start, Matt helped Northview to one of the finest seasons in school history. Northview captured the league title, district championship, along with a host of tournament championships before falling in overtime in the state final. Matt finished his junior season with 16 goals and 18 assist.

This year Matt was named team captain while battling through an off season knee injury. He has helped lead the Cats to a 18-7-1 overall record and a 3-1 record in the league. With about 4 weeks remaining in the season Matt has his team in contention for another league title and a shot at a state final four berth. Congratulations Matt on a great career and good luck!
