The Northview Wildcats are headed back to the State Frozen Four after defeating the Findlay Trojans this past Saturday @ Tam-o-Shanter by a final score of 7-1 in the District final. This marks the 8th trip for the Wildcats, also finalist in 76,81,82,86,87,90 & 2006, who are searching for their 1st state title after 4 runner-up finishes most recently an overtime loss in the title game in 06′.

Sophomore Zach Felser got the Cats rolling with the first 2 goal of the game. First he picked up a loose puck in the slot and beat Findlay Goalie Travis Friar on the backhand then he convereted off a rush from his own end for a 2-0 lead. Another Sophomore Kyler Omey made it 3-0 with just about 3 minutes left in the opening period as his point shot deflected into the upper corner off a Findlay defender. The Cats limited Findlay to just 2 shots in the opening frame.

Findlay did a much better job on defense in the 2nd period, but Ryan LaPlante found Tyler Harding streaking from the bench on a line change for a goal near the end of the period for a 4-0 lead after 2.

Senior Mark Hall would score for the 3rd straight game early in the 3rd for a 5-0 lead before Findlay Broke up Austin Gryca’s bid for a shutout and a 5-1 Cats lead. Senior Anthony Holley restored the 5 goal cushion minutes later with a breakaway goal and Aaron Booth would finish off a nice individual effort for the final margin.

The win was the 10th in a row for the Cats and propels them into the State Semi-final next Saturday @ 1 in Columbus at Nationwide Arena Northview will face Dublin Coffman in the Semi with University School and St. Ignatius playing in the other semi @ 10:30.

The Northview Wildcats found a way to defeat the St. Johns Titans for the 3rd time this season this past Saturday to earn a spot in the district finals with a hard fought 4-3 win at Tam-O-Shanter.

Mark Hall hit the eventual game winner early and the 3rd and Austin Gryca made 23 saves for the win. Hall’s goal came on his first shot with a brand new stick. He had broken his stick just before the 2nd intermission and scored just 51 seconds into the 3rd period after purchasing the new stick.

The game got off to a hectic start as 5 goals were scored in the 1st period as Northview led 3-2 after 1 period. Ryan Laplante scored off a rebound from Dalton Carter’s shot to give the Cats the lead mid-way through the opening frame. Zach Felser made it 2-0 with perhaps the prettiest goal of the season. After faking a shot and dragging the puck past a St. Johns defenseman Felser found the upper corner with a backhand shot to extend the Cats lead. The Johnnies tied the game in a 13 second span near the end of the 1st, however Nolan Culver scored off a end to end rush on the power play with a coach Elliott inspired backhand under the crossbar and the Cats would never relinquish the lead.

The Cats will take on the winner of tonight other semi-final between Findlay and St. Francis on Saturday night at 7 @ Tam-O-Shanter. St. Francis and Findlay were originally scheduled for Friday Evening but were pushed back due to the weather.

The Wildcats defeated Bowling Green in the 2nd round of district play Wednesday night by a final of 5-2 and will move on to play St. Johns this Saturday night at 7 in the District Semi-finals.

The Cats jumped out to a early lead on a goal from Mark Hall after some great fore-checking with line-mates Zach Felser and Dalton Carter. Aaron Booth made it 2-0 with a one time blast off a pass from Nolan Culver. BG would close to 2-1 with a goal near the end of the period as the teams headed to the 1st intermission. Northview would regain their 2 goal lead in the 2nd period scoring the only goal of the middle frame. Senior Captain Jordan Jones found a loose puck in the slot and his shot found its way through traffic for a 3-1 lead. Northview appeared to score another goal however it went in and out quickly and without the benefit of replay Northview would have to settle for a 2 goal lead after 2 periods. The Cats let up breifly at the start of the 3rd period and the Bobcats scored to close within a goal at 3-2, however Zach Felser Redeemed himself from a miscue earlier in the period to score on a pretty individual effort to regain a 2 goal cushion minutes later. Northview would clamp down defensively and seal the win as Nolan Culver scored in the final minutes for the final score, Northview 5 and Bowling Green 2.

Northview Will take on St. Johns on Saturday night for the the right to head to the district final. Game tme is 7 O’Clock @ tam-o and tickets are on sale at Northview and through Tam-o-Shanter. Please get your tickets and get out to support your Cats. Good luck boys!!!!

The Wildcats played 2 NHC games over the weekend winning both against Southview and Bowling Green to move into 2nd place in league play with 1 weekend left. St. Francis with 15 points leads conference play followed by the Cats at 14 and then SJJ with 13. Northview needs a win over St. Johns on Saturday to claim at least a second place finish in league play. There remains a possibilty of a league title with a win and help from SJJ and Findlay against St. Francis. A 1st or 2nd place finish would run Northview’s streak to 6 straight years of finishing in either 1st or 2nd in the NHC red division.

This past weekend the Cats claimed the mayors cup over Southview with a 6-4 win on Friday and avenged an earlier loss to BG with a 2-1 win on the road Sunday. In Fridays game the Cats started slow giving up an early goals to SV before Anthony Holley evened the score at 1. Mark Hall scored on the powerplay to give the Cats their first lead. The lead was short lived as the Cougars hit for 2 goals in the 2nd to take a 3-2 lead mid-way through the game. Aaron Booth Tied the game at the end of the 2nd to give the Cats some much needed momentum. Northview would take control of the game with a 3 goal outburst in a 3 minute span of the 3rd. Tyler Harding finished off a nice pass from Zach Felser, and Defensmen Graham Kelsey and Jordan Jones pushed the lead to 6-3. Southview would add a late goal to close the scoring out in a 6-4 win.

Sunday the Cats jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead before hanging on to deafeat Bowling green 2-1. Felser opened the scoring on a breakaway goal off a nice play from Kelsey and Dalton Carter. Nolan Culver added a goal near the end of the first to make it 2-0 after 1. The score remained that way until the 5 minute mark of the 3rd when the Bobcats closed to within 1 on a power play goal. Northview held off BG for the rest of the game killing off another powerplay late for the final.

The wins pushed the Cats overall record to 15-8-3 and 7-2 in league play. Northview will wrap up regular season play this Saturday at 7 with the Titans of St. Johns @ Tam-o-Shanter.

The Wildcats gave #1 state ranked St. Francis their second loss of the season and first in league play this past Saturday with a thrilling 2-1 shootout win.

St. Francis struck first on a goal by Scott Loy just over 6 minutes into the game. Unlike the previous 2 games the Cats didn’t let the early deficit get to them and stayed discipline in their attack. Aaron Booth responded for the Cats later in the period on a beautiful individual effort to tie the score at 1. After beating St. Francis Defenceman Ross Pilmore wide Booth was able to drag the puck past another St. Francis D-man before knocking the water bottle off the net with a top shelf snipe.

The second, third and overtime periods were back and forth hard fought play with both teams and goalies doing their best to win it. However after 53 minutes of play the score remained tied at 1. Due to an adopted rule for a shootout this year the teams would have to settle it in breakaway fashion. Insert Austin Gryca. He had delivered many quality saves to get to this point, but saved his best for the shootout. He stopped 3 of the top goal scorers in the league in 4 attempts and Dalton Carter and Booth scored to set up Nolan Culver for the dramatic conclusion. Culver deeked to his back hand before lifting a shot under the bar to send the Northview faithful into hysteria!

With the win the Cats moved their overall record to 13-8-3 and 5-2 in league play. This weekend the Cats take on Southview for the Mayors cup, before traveling to B.G. with a game versus the Bobcats on Sunday.

Thursday on Senior night the Cats rode a 5 goal outburst in the second period to shutout the Cougars 7-0 and move their record to 12-8-3 and 4-2 in league play.

Kyler Omey scored his first career goal and the game winner near the end of the first period to give the Cats a 1-0 lead after 1. Northview turned up the heat in the second period and were rewarded with 5 goals. Aaron Booth got the Cats going followed shortly after by Mark Hall. After a Southview timeout the Cats hit for a pair of powerplay goals. First Ryan Laplante found a loose puck for his 4th goal of the season, then Anthony Holley scored his first goal of the season redirecting a puck past the Southview netminder. Drew Kron would finish off a nifty play tucking the puck under the crossbar for a 6-0 lead after 2.

The Wildcats played 3 games over the Martin Luther King Weekend in Meadville Pennsylvania and came away with 2 wins. However a loss to St. Edwards in round robin play knocked the Cats out of te Tournament.

In the first game the Cats took on defending Pennsylvania state champs LaSalle. The Cats had never beat LaSalle over the years, but played perhaps their best game of the season in earning a 4 to 1 win. Zach Felser opened the scoring for the Cats before a LaSalle goal knotted the score at 1 apiece. The score would stay that way until the 3rd period when Aaron Booth connected for a powerplay goal and Mark Hall scored to give the Cats a 3 to 1 lead. With the goalie pulled Booth would seal the win with his second goal of the game hitting the empty net.

The Next Morning the Cats took on Penn. Leboeuf. Brady Storer scored his 1st career goal and Nolan Culver added a goal for a 2-0 lead after 1. The Cats would push the lead to 5-1 after 2 periods of play on goals from Hall, Felser and Culver’s second of the game. Northview would let a very important point get away in the modified scoring system in the 3rd as Leboeuf scored late on the powerplay for the final 5-2.

That evening leading their division the Cats took on St. Edwards needing just a point and a half to earn a spot in the semi-finals Sunday morning. Nothing went right in this one. 2 early 1st period goals by Ed’s helped knock the Cats from the Tournament. Nolan Culver provided the only highlight as the Cats were sent home with a 5-1 loss.

Overall the Cats had a decent weekend, but their inability to play consisitent hockey cost them in the end. Northview will look to rebound as they return to league play Friday night versus St. Francis.
